Join our Trap-Neuter-Return Team
Joining our trap-neuter-return team is a great way to get involved and help control the local community cat population in and around the Bruce Peninsula.
What is TNR?
“TNR” (trap-neuter-return) involves humanely trapping, fixing, and returning community cats to their location/colony. This solution for controlling the local community cat population is only intended for cats that are feral and cannot be socialized. These are cats that are NOT suited for indoor life. TNR is best when the cat(s) have a colony caregiver who provides food and shelter. In some cases, if returning the cats to their location is not in the best interest of the cats, we will divert these cats to our working cats program and seek more appropriate homes for them. This may be a farm or a shop, where they will be fed and sheltered, but will not be confined to a domestic life.
What about socialized cats or domesticated strays?
When community cats can be socialized/domesticated and/or when kittens are involved, the TNR team will assist with trapping and fixing the cats. The cats will then be placed in foster homes and be put up for adoption.
What do TNR team members do?
Volunteers on our TNR team will help assess local community cats or colonies and decide on a plan for each individual cat. They will also assist with humanely trapping these cats, then help with arranging transportation for spay/neuter appointments and/or to foster homes.
After-Care for TNR Cats
We are also seeking volunteers for our TNR team that can provide appropriate space and after-care for feral/unsocialized cats while they recover from their spay/neuter surgery. This includes providing a quiet and confined space for a 3 to 14 days, as well as daily feeding and litter box cleaning. This could be in a kennel in a small/quiet room, in a kennel in a climate controlled garage, or even a shed or a barn during milder months – as long as the cat is confined to a small and quiet space so they can recover, and is provided appropriate care and climate.
